Paul and June Everitt wanted to do something good for children in the West Washington School District so they established a trust through a bank in Northern Indiana. Even though they passed away several years ago, they are doing just that. WWSC educators were encouraged to apply for grants that encouraged collaboration and unique learning opportunities for their students.
The Junior/Senior High School Music Department, under the leadership of Hannah Ledgerwood, has been awarded a $3206.83 grant to purchase much needed equipment as well as upgrading other equipment. The grant will be used to purchase and repair student instruments, update covers for current and new instruments to extend their life, and help remove financial and logistical barriers that currently prevent students from participating in music programs.
Jennifer Stahl’s 11th and 12th grade classes will practice student broadcasting and storytelling through a $2700.00 grant. The classes will blend literary analysis, argumentative writing, research and public speaking by creating audio programs that analyze literature, examine social issues, and present researched arguments for authentic audiences to elevate student voice, deepen textual analysis, and equip students with real-world communication skills through the creation of podcasts.
Kristin Messmore’s Chemistry classes will be practicing real-world chemistry thanks to a $3240.00 grant for “Molecules to Market”. The project will utilize innovative project-based chemistry curriculum designed to connect abstract chemistry concepts to authentic, real-world applications by applying core chemistry standards through 3D printing to create molecular models and apply quantitative chemistry skills to produce soap, lotion, and lip balm; bridging classroom learning with industry-relevant practices.
The Drama Department led by Kayla Seybold will see new production equipment due to a $1761.97 grant. The funds will be used to purchase and repair audio equipment that will improve production quality for public performances and community engagements through the drama department.
Lydia Manship and other Special Needs classrooms in grades PreK-6 will see new seating options in order to decrease sensory overload, meltdowns, and anxiety while increasing attention and emotional regulation. The $2481.17 grant for new seating allows for sensory input and energy release without disrupting tasks and peers while increasing organization for better focus and engagement.
Collaboration between Bethany Hepp and Brian Wolfe will show students expanding sustainable energy. The $2372.00 grant will be utilized to purchase kits and items that correlate and provide standards-aligned instructional materials related to sustainable energy, alternative fuels, and environmental stewardship through the agricultural and science departments.
